International Security
International Alliances
As the term indicates the International Alliance is a formal agreement between two states to provide mutual support in case of war. Apart from being informal a treaty can be formalized obligating an ally to help the fellow member. In an attempt to maintain the balance of power and a system comprising of medium-size countries no state is able to maintain a lasting hegemony.
Alliances have taken shape in other eras and continents with their associations emerging from the Westphalia states system and other European balance of power. After WWII the two groups were divided into Axis and Allied Powers. The major Allied powers were France, Russia, the United States, and Britain.
